Situated in the heart of Jersey City, Journal Squared is a transit-oriented development of three high-rise residential towers above street level retail, immediately adjacent to the Journal Square PATH Station. The main interface with the PATH Station is Magnolia Plaza, a shared space accommodating both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Melillo + Bauer Associates worked with the Port Authority of NY + NJ to create an aesthetic space that not only serves as a main pedestrian entrance to the PATH Station, but also must to address buses, a parking structure entrance, occasional deliveries, security concerns, and the operation of emergency vehicles. An extension of the building column grid informs the pavement of Magnolia Plaza and the surrounding streetscape. A large, canted oval green interrupts the streetscape grid at the corner of Pavonia and Summit Avenues. Amenity spaces for the residents are created on various levels and include outdoor grilling, dining, and lounge spaces as well as a dog park. Cubic shade structures provide a unique sculptural element for the amenity spaces.
